We enjoyed brunch at Dirt Candy, the famous vegetable-centric restaurant now in a larger location on the Lower East Side. We’ve been meaning to visit ever since we read their cookbook and illustrated graphic-novel style autobiography a few years ago.

My meal was Green Huevos & No Ham — ridiculously flavourful including two eggs coated in a thin batter and fried, with perfectly runny yolks inside.

Josie’s brunch was a smoked beet sandwich and potatoes. The smoked beets were more delicious than many meats we’ve eaten. The potatoes were incredible and made me regret my choice of a perfectly respectable salad as a side.

Later, on our last night, we had some stellar Mexican at the La Esquina tacqueria at Kenmare and Lafayette, near our hotel. Carnita tacos and crazy delicious mole quesadillas. Cheap, fast, good.

Finally, I grasped my last beer of the trip, a Mexican Tecate.

Addendum: A year or so later, I completed this painting of the outside of La Esquina, seen at night.
