This week we discovered a couple more good places to eat and drink near our place in Seville.
Bar Ajoblanco is a quirky little place that sells vinyl records, VHS tapes and Tex-Mexish food. We tried some tacos and enchiladas along with an order of nachos and guac.
We also ordered the dish the bar is named after: ajo blanco. Though “ajo blanco” translates literally as “white garlic”, there isn’t actually much garlic in it. It’s a mild and slightly sweet soup with a ground almond base, garnished with grapes. It’s served cold and is hard to find in the winter, so we were happy to get a chance to try it.
AjoBlanco Bar also had the largest cigarette machine we’ve seen in Spain, where they are not particularly rare. People still smoke a lot here compared to back home, but thankfully, just like Lisbon, they only do it outside on patios and never inside restaurants.
A more surprising find was Bier Kraft, a trendy little craft beer bar with great American BBQ.
The mystery was solved when we learned that Bier Kraft was opened earlier this year by expats from Rochester, New York. The owners are very welcoming and it was nice to enjoy such a familiar vibe in the midst of our trip, and to have a break from Cruzcampo and tapas. The interior is beautifully renovated, and they have dozens of international beers for sale along the back wall — including a few from Unibroue in Quebec, we noticed.
They have good rotating taps, including some darker stouts (hard to find in Spain). The menu looks great and both the ribs and hoisin chicken sandwich were delicious. We’ll likely sneak in one more visit during our last week here.
