Last weekend we had dinner at The Food Temple, a vegan restaurant just around the corner from our rented house in Mouraria. Reservations were a must!
It turns out that Alice, the founder of The Food Temple, was born in Vancouver.
We enjoyed the the welcoming warmth and funkiness at the restaurant. The menu changes often.
A good range of craft beers were available, but we had a lovely little bottle of vinho verde, which is a very light and slightly bubbly type of young wine.
First up was a very nice abóbora (pumpkin) soup.
We then had all three starters: rice balls with watercress (no idea where they found cress!), noodles with lotus root (Gary’s favourite of the three) and pear salad.
Our main was black rice with tomato pepper stew with grilled eggplant. Not as pretty but very tasty.
On the way home, we walked past a couple examples of the plaques commemorating fado performers. Mouraria is considered the birthplace of fado, a traditional genre of Lisbon music.
