A short distance from the Temple of Olympian Zeus stands Hadrian’s Arch, erected by Emperor Hadrian in 161-162 AD to mark the boundary between old and new Athens at the time.
Today the arch stands oddly isolated from anything else, on a scrubby patch of gravel, with taxis and scooters zipping past. I think I prefer the way it looked according to Robert Sayer back in 1759…
(Robert Sayer’s various etching of Athens make me feel like I’m visiting about 261 years too late… but the wi-fi would have been terrible back then.)
