We escaped the city for a day and took a bus tour to see a small portion of the Western Highlands. One of our stops was the small town of Inveraray (pop. 600) on Loch Fyne.
Much of what remains of the town today was laid out in the late 1700’s as the first planned Georgian town in Scotland
Inveraray is known as a center for fishing, particularly herring and mackerel.
The view across the loch was nice even at low tide. The small tower visible at the upper left is Dun na Cuaiche.
We had a great lunch at the George Hotel, which dates to 1776 and has been run by the same family for the past seven generations.
The interior had all the atmosphere you could want in an old pub, with wooden floors and stone and paneled walls. The food was excellent, particularly the steak pie with mashed potatoes and carrots. There were several well-behaved large dogs relaxing while their owners’ ate.
